Consultative Spotlight: Georgian Court University
In fall 2016, the Center for FaithJustice (CFJ) and Georgian Court University (GCU) forged a partnership to revitalize GCU’s first-seminar program, which is a mandatory introductory class for all matriculating freshman.
Located in the same Diocese as CFJ, GCU is a Catholic co-educational academic institution offering both undergraduate and graduate level programs rooted in the Mercy core values of justice, respect, integrity, service, and compassion. GCU leadership had long wanted the seminar to incorporate service components, but lacked the capacity to do so.
GCU engaged CFJ given our organization’s logistical and theological expertise in providing meaningful service experiences for young adults. Together with GCU faculty, we helped to design a syllabus and schedule that incorporated service and social justice without infringing on needed academic and classroom time. In the end, we designed multiple core experiences for the students including a commemorative prayer service on the fifteenth anniversary of 9/11, classroom education on the difference between service and justice, and two on-campus service opportunities. In all, more than 225 students completed nearly 1,000 hours of service benefitting ten local non-profit organizations.
We are thrilled to partner with GCU and other like-minded organizations. Contact us today with your idea!
